Field guide · Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Minca, plate by plate.

Ten plans for your days here: two without leaving the finca — the river and the viewpoint — and eight around Minca, among pools, waterfalls, mountain coffee and Sierra birds.

These are suggestions, not tours: Finca Hostal Bolívar doesn’t sell or run the outside plans. We pass on what the sources say; before heading out, check with each place and keep an eye on the weather and the river.

The field guide

Ten plates, from riverbank to ridge.

Each plate tells you how to get there, how much effort it takes, the best time of day, what to bring and what to watch out for. The sources sit underneath, so you don’t have to take our word for it.

Part I

On the finca

No transport, no one else’s timetable: the river is down by Casa Maracuyá, the viewpoint up top. All you need is time.

Plate 01

On the finca

The finca’s river

Private access to the Gaira river

Walk down from Casa Maracuyá and you reach the water: pools between big boulders, shade and the river as background noise. It’s this finca’s great simple luxury: a cold dip after a hike, or just a rock to sit and read on.

Pozo Azul

Natural pools upriver

A string of pools and small falls on the same river, just outside the village. It’s Minca’s classic swim, so go early: in high season, at weekends and on holidays it gets busy.

Getting there
On foot along the road to Pozo Azul (the same road as the finca’s lower grounds); several guides put it at under an hour’s walk. Mototaxis also go.

Cafés, fruit and nothing to do
